Christmas & New Year's in Telluride: 2026 Holiday Guide
The short answer: Telluride's holiday season starts with Noel Night and the lighting of the Ski Tree in early December, continues with Mountain Village's Holiday Prelude on December 12–13, 2026, and wraps up with torchlight parades on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, fireworks in Mountain Village and a midnight countdown on Main Street. Telluride Ski Resort is targeting a November 26, 2026 opening, so the holidays fall in the heart of ski season.
Christmas events in Telluride
Noel Night and the Ski Tree lighting. Telluride kicks off the holidays on an early-December Wednesday with Noel Night. Downtown shops offer holiday discounts, and the Ski Tree, built from skis donated by the community, is lit in Elks Park. Check telluride.com for the 2026 date.
Mountain Village Holiday Prelude, December 12–13, 2026. Mountain Village dresses up for the season with Santa, carolers and ice skating, traditionally capped by a Saturday-evening tree lighting in Heritage Plaza.
Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade. Telluride Ski & Snowboard School instructors ski down from the top of the gondola into town carrying torches. It depends on the weather (the 2025 parade was canceled for weather), so check before heading out.
Holiday shows. The historic Sheridan Opera House hosts holiday concerts and shows in late December.

Planning tips for holiday week
Book early. Christmas and New Year's are among the busiest weeks of the winter in Telluride.
Use the free gondola. It runs 6:30 a.m. to midnight and links town and Mountain Village, so you can catch events on both sides without driving.
Plan for altitude and winter roads. Telluride sits above 8,700 feet, so allow time to acclimate, and bring AWD or 4WD if you drive.
Reserve dinners ahead. Holiday-week tables fill up, especially on New Year's Eve.
Where to stay for the holidays
Stay in town to walk to Noel Night, the Main Street countdown and the gondola.
